The article aims to reflect on the importance of the school in the process of consolidating citizenship and democracy in our country. Based on this, it discusses the meaning of the terms citizenship and democracy and how these were consolidated in Brazil through legal frameworks. It discusses the social role of the school in citizenship and democratic formation, presenting some challenges to be faced for its development in the national society. We live in a capitalist society that aims at marketing education and to combat the result of this educational model, it is necessary to fight for the development of a liberating education committed to reducing social inequalities in our country. The school alone cannot change a social order. The school must guarantee scientific knowledge, making the individual aware of the intentions of the current society, making him critical, autonomous and transforming.
