Abstract

ABSTRACT:

Reading is an essential act for the development of language, for the acquisition of knowledge, and for a critical view of the world, especially in times of digital technologies. However, even in the presence of highly advanced digital technologies connected to the internet, it is common to hear complaints that students do not read well and are not interested in reading, particularly literary reading. And the indices presented in assessment exams confirm this premise. Thus, this experience report aims to foster discussions about school reading practices, as well as about reading teaching methods, already discussed in the 1990s, yet still so urgent. Effective and careful access by teachers to knowledge produced about reading comprehension; to the theoretical foundation on the cognitive processing of reading and text comprehension, with the aim of working with students on appropriate reading strategies at the various stages of learning they still needs to be achieved in Brazil. To this end, a bibliographic review, combined with an experience report of a reading mediation based on the short story “The Sin,” by Lima Barreto, carried out with first-year students of integrated vocational high school at IF Baiano campus Senhor do Bonfim, in the subject Reading and Text Production I, was developed with this purpose. The mediation sought to illustrate the theoretical foundation that supports the argument presented in this article and may also provide opportunities for civic education toward a decolonial and Afro-centered education.
